Picking on Stan: Teasing, face, and alignment in masculine discourse

Program Summary:
This paper analyzes the discourse of four young men playing poker and the ways in which three of the informants use prosody, sarcasm, critical comments, and exclusionary references to isolate and alienate a fourth member – all in seemingly good fun. The findings describe oppositional alliances commonly found in masculine discourse.
