Marriage Research Laboratory

Ongoing Research

Several types of research are being conducted in Dr. Sanford’s marriage research laboratory. In observational studies, married couples make one or more visits to the laboratory. During each visit, couples are interviewed, they complete questionnaires, and they are videotaped as they discuss areas of conflict in their relationship. In other studies, couples are simply given questionnaires to complete at home. There is also currently a research questionnaire that couples can complete on the web. This anonymous questionnaire is automatically scored and couples receive immediate personal feedback regarding their responses. In addition to research with married couples, Dr. Sanford frequently conducts research on other types of close interpersonal relationships such as friendships, dating relationships, and roommate relationships. Taken together, this program of research seeks to addresses questions regarding communication, emotion, and cognition in interpersonal relationships. Ultimately, the purpose of this research is to help people establish stable and satisfying interpersonal relationships.
